The Dutch government stimulates innovation by lowering the threshold for companies to invest in research and development. This is achieved through the WSBO arrangement. WBSO is a tax instrument that allows companies to reduce R&D related costs. This arrangement stimulates the number of innovation activities within the business community. This will also strengthen the Dutch business climate.
In 2020, approx. 20,000 Dutch companies made use of the WBSO arrangement for more than 135,000 R&D projects for a total amount of 1.2 billion euros. Of these companies, 97 percent belonged to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This is an increase of 6 percent compared to 2019.
Finally, the Netherlands has made a one-off extra 157 million euros available for the WBSO for 2021.
