EUROPEAN COMMISSION OPENED AN IN-DEPTH INVESTIGATION TO ASSESS OPTICS MERGER

20/02/2020

The European Commission has opened in-depth investigation into proposed acquisiton of GrandVision by EssilorLuxottica.

EssilorLuxottica is a Paris-based multinational company founded in 2018 after the merger of Italian Luxottica and French Essilor, and is the world’s largest supplier of lens and eyewear with 9100 retail stores worldwide. GrandVision operates in the retailing of eyeglass in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia with 7000 retail stores. EssilorLuxottica is the market leader in the glasses and lens market, while GrandVision is the largest retail chain in the optics industry. Therefore European Comission raised several competitive concerns. Within the in-depth investigation;

  • The impacts of the proposed merger in the countries where the parties are competing,
  • The possibility of abuse of EssilorLuxottica’s market power in the supply market against rival retailers,
  • The possibility of hindering rival suppliers’ access to Granvision retail chain.

is expected to be evaluated.
