The EU had previously passed six sanctions packages to put maximum pressure on Russia to end the aggression in Ukraine.

On 21 July 2022, the European Union (EU) adopted the seventh sanctions package against Russia. The sanctions have been imposed because of the continued Russian aggression against Ukraine.

In short, the new EU sanctions against Russia are as follows:

  • Ban on the import of gold and jewelery from Russia.
  • Stricter reporting obligation for persons and entities on the sanctions list.
  • 48 persons and 9 entities are added to the sanctions list.
  • Extension of the export ban on dual-use goods.
  • Strengthen the implementation of the previous six packages. The six sanction packages will be extended until early 2023.
  • Clarification of exemptions in the field of agricultural and food products, including wheat and fertilisers.
