German competition authority the Bundeskartellamt discretionally terminated the ongoing investigation against SKY Ltd. and DAZN Group Ltd for UEFA Champions League broadcasting rights.
The Bundeskartellamt had been investigating SKY and DAZN for engaging in anti-competitive agreements regarding UEFA Champions League broadcasting rights. Accordingly, SKY would be the only company to acquire the broadcasting rights for all games and sublicense the rights of some games to DAZN. The investigation was initiated on suspicion that the companies had split their broadcasting rights before the award procedure. Bundeskartellamt decided to discontinue the investigation as the new players entering the market increased the competition in the award procedure regarding broadcasting rights for Champions League games starting from the season of 2021/22 and unpredictable impacts of COVID-19 crisis on the current football season in Europe.
