CMA WARNED TESCO FOR ANTICOMPETITIVE PRACTICES

16/03/2020

UK antitrust authority, The Competition and Market Authority (“CMA”), intervened in Tesco’s anti-competitive behaviors by preventing open a supermarket near Tesco’s store.

CMA found in 2018 that Tesco put pressure on property owners not to sell their properties to rival supermarkets. CMA found 23 violations in Tesco’s contracts signed with landowners. Following CMA’s findings, Tesco committed to;

  • Make all property contract compliant with the Law,
  • Revise the contracts that violate the Law,
  • Train the staff for future breaches.

CMA announced that the commitments are binding on Tesco. CMA also requested from the supermarkets; Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, M&S and the Co-op to demonstrate that their property contracts are in compliance with rule.
