THE NETHERLANDS AND THE NEW LOCKDOWN

18/12/2020

Based on the recent report of World Economic Forum (WEF), in which 37 countries have been surveyed with respect to the annual Global Competitiveness Report, the Dutch economy seems strong enough to recover from the corona crisis as fourth country behind Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. After the Netherlands, China follows as 5th, Canada as 6th, and New Zealand as 7th.

The high score of the Netherlands is, amongst other things, due to the high-quality digital economy and digital skills of the population. This allows the economy to be kept afloat while people work from home. In addition to a good digital infrastructure, having a substantial social safety net is an important precondition for getting through the crisis strongly.

The WEF study assessed the countries on eleven areas, based on the scores the extent to which a country can transform its economy has been determined. Those areas include the confidence in public authorities, the quality of social services, the ability to invest in innovation, and improving diversity and inclusion.

In the report, the Netherlands gets compliments for the expectations on its future labour market. According to the researchers, the Netherlands has also reliable public institutions and good social facilities. This report states further that the Netherlands is also one of the countries with greater biotechnology capacity and established national and international collaborations between universities and companies and are therefore able to develop solutions to the current crisis, and are better placed to cope with future pandemics. For the most categories the Netherlands scores above average.

Despite the worldwide negative effects of Covid-19, the country remains its strong position in the world as one of the most reliable and stable countries to invest in.
