From 1 July, the Netherlands will gradually transfer asylum seekers again to the European country that is responsible for examining the asylum application. That has been decided by the State Secretary of Justice and Security. The resumption is possible because the travel restrictions imposed after the coronavirus outbreak are slowly being lifted. The asylum procedure has also been restarted in many European Member States.
The Dublin Regulation determines which European country is responsible for examining an asylum application. Usually this is the country where the asylum seeker entered the Dublin Member States first, or where the foreign national submitted his first asylum application. But it may also be that another country is responsible, because family or relatives live there, who have a residence permit there. Determining the Member State responsible for the asylum application and transferring the asylum seekers concerned to this Member State will prevent secondary migration within Europe.
